"You Got the Love" is a 1986 single by Candi Staton. It was then remixed by The Source and re-released in 1991 as 'The Source and Candi Staton'. In 2008, the song was covered by English soul singer Joss Stone for her fourth studio album, Colour Me Free!, released in October 2009. In November 2009, another cover version was released as a single by English indie rock band Florence and the Machine. The Now Voyager Remix of the song was used for the theme tune of live Football League coverage on Sky Sports until the start of the 2014-15 season.
The original version is a soul/disco/gospel track (released in the UK by Streetwave in 1986) written by Anthony B. Stephens, Arnecia Michelle Harris and John Bellamy. It featured an a cappella version utilised by Paul Simpson for a remix of the Adeva song "Musical Freedom" in 1989. The original Candi Staton track had been recorded for a video-only 1980s documentary about an obese man who was trying to lose weight. When approached by The Source, Candi said she couldn't remember having recorded a song called "You Got the Love". It was only later that she realised she had performed the song years earlier for the documentary. The producers of the video had selected the song for her to sing, but as they had no funds to pay her, they donated half of the copyright and publishing to Candi.
"You Got the Love" is a hit song for the funk band Rufus. It was written by Ray Parker, Jr. and Chaka Khan. From the Rags to Rufus album, it spent one week at number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart in 1974. It also peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
You Got the Love is the first track of 1983 live album Stompin' at the Savoy - Live.
Chaka Khan re-recorded You Got the Love/Pack'd My Bags medley for her 2007 album Funk This, with Tony Maiden on guitar.
You Got the Love may refer to:
Steal it, take it, know my name in loving memory
Sand it, brand it, in your brain, a forthright eulogy
I am but a sinner here, my faults are underlined
I have but to hold you near to cleanse the sins of time
I have known you, all too well
I have shown you, all too well
I have thrilled you, all too well
I have filled you, with the sense of what you need to
Speak up, calling my name out
Speak up, the shattering of doubt
This is where you start
With nails run through your heart
Leave the name, burned in the brain
Leave your mark
Find it, blind it with your light or curse to be alive
Will it, kill it in your night, commit yourself to thrive
You are but a sinner hear, each breath is now your crime
You have but to shed a tear, to wash away the time
I have known you, all too well
I have shown you, all too well
I have thrilled you, all too well
I have filled you, with the sense of what you need to
Speak up, calling my name out
Speak up, the shattering of doubt
This is where you start
With nails run through your heart
Leave the name, burned in the brain
Leave your mark
Give me your principles, values and hope
Or I'll take them away
Not so convincible if you can't cope
Or rise to the day
Worn out the morals that lit up the path
Now gone to the dark
Frayed are the laurels, igniting the wrath
They left in the mark
Wrap me in darkness, wrap me in light
Wrap me in indestructible light
Way down the road it's better, believe me
Way down the road it's gone (god)
Carry the load, it's harder, believe me
Carry it to your dawn (a lightning rod)
Way down the road it's better, believe me
Way down the road it's gone (god)
Carry the load, it's harder, believe me
